THE STORY
Reference 43040, the Heure Sautante, is one of the quietest important watches Vacheron Constantin made in the 1990s. It revives a jumping-hour display the maison first used in Art Deco pocket watches of the 1920s — the hour snaps forward through an aperture at twelve while a triangular onyx pointer, floating on a disc beneath the dial, sweeps the minutes around the edge. That instantaneous jump normally costs case height, but Vacheron built it onto the ultra-thin automatic Cal. 1120/2 HS — a movement descended from the legendary Jaeger-LeCoultre Cal. 920 — and kept the gold case to roughly seven millimetres. A silver guilloché dial, stepped bezel and sapphire display back make it read as a restrained dress watch; the mechanism underneath makes it one of the rarer Vacheron complications of the decade, with only around 323 examples made.

The Reference
Reference 43040 sits in the Vacheron Constantin Les Historiques line — the maison programme of reviving its own past. Introduced in 1994, it resurrects a jumping-hour display Vacheron used in Art Deco pocket watches of the 1920s and 1930s, sometimes called Chronoscope dials, and brings it to the wrist. It arrived in the quiet middle of the decade, after the quartz crisis and before the steel-sports boom, which is why it stayed under the radar: no hype, just a serious complication executed with restraint. Roughly 323 were made across yellow gold and platinum, making it one of the rarer Vacheron complications of the era.
The Design
The dial is the argument. A silver guilloché field carries a jumping-hour aperture at twelve and a peripheral minute track around the edge, swept by a slim triangular onyx pointer that seems to float above the surface — it actually rides a disc turning beneath the dial, completing one rotation every hour. A stepped bezel frames the 36mm case, and the whole watch reads as a plain dress piece until you notice the hour has snapped forward rather than crept. Nothing shouts; the drama is entirely mechanical.
The Mechanics
Underneath is the Cal. 1120/2 HS, built on the legendary ultra-thin automatic Cal. 920 — a movement developed with Jaeger-LeCoultre and used by Vacheron, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, yet never in a JLC-branded watch. A jumping hour normally demands extra case height to store and release the energy for its instantaneous jump; building it onto the 920 base kept the gold case to roughly seven millimetres, a genuine feat. Through the sapphire back you see a peripheral rotor and 38 jewels doing quiet, precise work.
